Tim Zager's Overkill Deck

What is the Overkill Deck?

  • Perform Mind-Reading Miracles
  • Demonstrate An Impossible "Mr. Wizard" Effect Over The Phone
  • Master A Two-Person Code Act You Can Learn In Minutes

Possible Effects:
Riffle thru cards until spectator says STOP. When they look at the card, performer immediatley knows the card they are looking at. Free choice. NO sleights. Different card each time.

Riffle thru cards until spectator says stop. Someone from across the room can name the card. Great for a two person act. You can teach your assitant how to do this in literally 90 seconds. (that's how long it took me to teach my 16 yr old son) NO memorization. The deck does ALL the work.

Performer writes a name and telephone number on a piece of paper and openly displays. A card is selected (as above). The spectator can use their own phone, call and ask for the person written on the sheet of paper...say anything they want. Person called reveals the card.

When card is selected (as above) the performer immediately knows the position of the card in a Tamariz and Aronson deck. You can combine the reveal with effects you already do with either deck. Again, the deck does ALL the work. You do not need to know anything about the Tamariz or Aronson deck.

You can riffle shuffle, overhand shuffle, fan, spread, show fronts/backs
...much like you would any regular deck.

As for selecting a card, any selection no matter what effect above is used, is
ALWAYS a free choice. ANY of 52 cards could be chosen.

No Selection Is Ever Forced.

The idea for the Overkill Deck would not have been possible without the support of many friends and the principles already published in other works.

The idea started when a brilliant closeup magician Jason Dean from Kansas City fooled me badly with a peek principle he had been using for some time. It was a way to peek as many cards as you could comfortably remember, with zero sleight of hand.  His method and presentation was very deceiving!

I challenged myself to duplicate the same effect, but being able to shuffle the cards more openly. I found the solution in the Tarbell Course in Magic.

I started to use the deck as a lazy man's way of peeking cards with no sleights. The next idea was to be able to secretly communicate the value of a peeked card to another person for a simple code act. Harry Lorayne gave me permission to use an idea from APOCALYPSE.  I created a simple method that covered all 52 cards.

One of the most exciting features of the deck is the ability to do a Mr. Wizard type effect over the telephone. J.D. Roberts, a mentalist from Kansas City came up with a method to allow any spectator to use any phone to make the call. Mr. Roberts also encouraged me to include as much 'secret info' as possible to create multiple effects. That led to devising a way to know the stack position of a peeked card in a Tamariz and Aronson stack.

Special thanks to Barrie Richardson for encouraging me to offer the deck to the magic community. Barrie has mentored me in many areas of my performance career, and has always been supportive of my crazy ideas.

Thanks to Joe Givan for being the “medium” at Magic In The Rockies while demonstrating and introducing the deck to several magicians. He was the funniest, most entertaining medium I had ever seen! On a more serious note, Joe offered some solid presentation ideas.

Thanks also to Richard Busch, John Riggs and Max Maven for their feedback and help finding credit for principles used.

Finally, a huge thank you to Christian Schenk from Card-Shark for manufacturing the deck and incorporating ideas from the Phoenix deck design.
